Who is Anna Horvath?

I am still trying to find her but I think it is best to describe her with some contradictions: a small girl with a large amount of energy who creates playful designs with serious messages. She has a joyful attitude with a hard-working professional life, a complex mind that is expressed in primary shapes and colours, and last but not least a sensitive woman with a lot of masculine energy.

Can you describe what you do in one sentence?

Storytelling in three dimensions!

Can you describe your background?

I obtained classical art training at the age of 12, which continued at the Furniture Design Department of the Secondary School of Fine and Applied Arts in Budapest. The course was an intense mix of art, culture carpentry, and design within a framework of a gymnasium. We had so many lessons that they couldn’t fit into 5 days so we had to attend school every Saturday…

Later, I studied Architecture at the Moholy-Nagy Design University in Budapest, then have been lucky to gain my Master’s in Narrative Environments at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London.

How would you describe your furniture collection?

I think SORGI is a good combination of many things. The collection pieces are unique designs that aim to provide seating for both tourists and locals in public spaces. While they stand as a critical statement for property development ( not protecting our architectural heritage), it also draws up solutions for recycling construction waste.

Generally, the pieces aim to teach the community for the importance of our architectural heritage and circular economy. However, you can also see the collectible design items as tombstones of our architectural heritage in some dark way. SORGI aims to create interesting, site-specific spots on the islandof Malta and beyond,  that can turn unknown locations into destinations and serve as a city-branding tool. + I hope they are objects that are visually pleasing.

What inspired you for the creation of Sorgi and Collezione L!puff?

SORGI – As an architect , I saw firsthand what was going on in the construction industry. To be honest, even if you weren’t an architect, you could see the sudden changes of Malta’s architectural landscape. It was heartbreaking to see beautiful buildings with great architectural value, being demolished or extended in a way that kill the original structure/shape/materiality. I couldn’t understand how architects have no sources for using second-hand materials, even though the quarries were full.

Collezione L!puff – In Summer 2017, my grandma wasn’t doing too well and I was also quitting my office job in Berlin, so I decided to move back to Hungary for a few months. This period gave me the opportunity to start a prototype and create Collezione L!puff while also being close to the family. The inspiration for the material came from colorful spectrum glass I found at a local glass maker. The designs were in my head for many years. 4 months later I ended up at the Paris Design Week with it.

What is your favourite piece to date?

If I have to choose one, maybe the rocking chair from Collezione L!puff or the Budapest shelf I have created for my gallerists Marie & Balint.

What is next for you?

Lately, I have been dealing with the business side of SORĠI and its incorporation, which is a really long and painful process. The start-up went through 3 accelerator programs that help me turn this public art project into a sustainable business. It hasn’t been that exciting, but I had to lay down the right foundations if I want to scale later. In many European countries, conversations have started about possible implementation.

I form part of numerous collaborations in design and architectural projects at the moment which will be made public soon (we are creating some exciting public space projects in the 3 cities). I also have an exciting interior design project for an old converted villa in Budapest, and  lastly, I will also have a piece exhibited in Milan in the coming months. Apart from that, I hope I will also travel somewhere far next 🙂
