Who is Marc?

I am a french videographer and I live in Paris. I watch a lot of movies, old and new, and I (try to) read a lot. Inspiration comes mainly from poetry (especially the poems of my wife Naomi!), from paintings and literature.

How would you describe your work to someone who doesn’t know you?

There are three main aspects of my work. The first one being curation. It’s been years that I’ve been editing movies and posting short sequences on Instagram. I have shared more than 550 films, which almost feels like a herbarium to me.

The second aspect is a venture which I have developed with my associate Olivier Lalane. We focus on music videos, art videos and installations for musicians/orchestras/ensembles and video scenographies for opera.

The third aspect is my own work. Social media is for me an open lab where I can show everything I make, but also everything I try. I don’t care about having the perfect content before showing it to people. I’m not a perfectionist at all, so it’s quite liberating being able to post anything I want. I like the fact that I can show work in progress, or ideas that are not fully completed. For example, at the moment I am making a mini series of portraits illustrating haikus, and something else I enjoy doing is music, both on my own as well as in collaboration with my wife. Together, we have a band called Ciel Bleu d’Orage.

What about your style?

For my curator account, I must admit I love people facing the camera. As simply as that. It’s even better when they look at the camera.  For my own creations, I really don’t try to have a coherent style or anything.

Do you think you have created that one true piece that you’re happy with? Or rather, do you think an artist can ever achieve that?

Of course I don’t! But if I had to choose something, I would say the music video I made for a french choir ensemble called Aedes. It is an illustration of a poem by Paul Eluard, put in music by Poulenc.

Your videos often leave the viewer wondering what’s the back story, how important is this element for you? And how do you choose that one shot that you’re sure is going to leave the audience even more curious?

In my curator profile, I want the very small pieces of films to have their own life. They do not need to be put in context. They are autonomous things.

For my own work, I mainly try to get away from narrativity. I trust the viewer. People can find my video very naïve, funny or crappy. I don’t want to explain anything.

What’s next for you?

Another EP soon with Ciel Bleu d’Orage. We also just finished shooting the first feature film for my friend Florent Hill. I was behind the camera and it was a great experience, so the natural next step is cinema.
