South African artist Nico Krijno shares an incomplete manifesto on his approach to art, creativity and experimentation in his work.
Maxwellinked and his lines.
A little bit about yourself – what’s your story?
I come from very humble roots, and lived kind of an idyllic childhood in the country. Then I went to college, I grew a separate brain, and much of what has transpired is a blur.
I’ve been through 2 divorces, lost custody of my child when she was 7 weeks old. I left my significant other in nyc just two weeks ago, and, well, life is tricky now.
Leaving nyc after 20 years has made me focus even more on my work and NFT’s. I’m a work in progress.
I don’t think much about my life, I just kinda do things I feel I must. And drawing is and has always been a constant thing I can rely on.
“From 18-40 it’s kind of a black hole of confusion, anxiety, pain and perseverance to make a living from this singular thing, which is drawing.”
What’s your favourite part of the creative process?
The process. So, what I’m trying to articulate is so fundamental, I risk sounding foolish. But, watching the ink be absorbed into the paper. That’s it.
Your work is extremely unique – tell us about your artistic style.
I started drawing when I was 18, as the result of getting my first tattoo. From 18-40 it’s kind of a black hole of confusion, anxiety, pain and perseverance to make a living from this singular thing, which is drawing.
Any downside to being an artist – apart from cleaning your tools?
Shoutout to your top source of inspiration? Person, book, snack… go wild.
Well, top on my list of people living are Nate Hill and essentially the whole nft community at Hic et Nunc. The paradigm shift in the art world has come and with that, just a general shout out for change. I’d also say artists like Giotto, Bosch, Dürer, Bruegel, Goya, Doré and Dali but that may be a bit dry. Oh, Pollock and Hilma af Klimt.
