Justine Ellul

Freelance photographer from a very young age that loves capturing people’s personalities through pictures and the mind behind the birth edition photographic centerpiece.

What’s your backstory and what are you doing in life right now?

I am a 26 year old photographer, full-time freelance for the last decade. I love going on walks and roller-skating during my down-time. I have a huge interest in people, hence why I love documenting them and highly believe I would have been a Therapist if not in this creative industry.

Name one defining moment from your life.

Living abroad. I loved staying in Iceland, it helped me grow a better understanding to life. I’m also in love with The Netherlands and love going there for a few weeks when time permits.

How long have you been doing art?

Ever since secondary school.

How would you describe your style?

I find my approach very simple and minimal, yet very personal and comfortable.

Favorite artform/s that you partake in.

Photography (old school and digital), Illustrations, Prints.

Favorite artform/s that you don’t partake in.

Videography

What rituals get you in a creative mood?

I love researching, I love photobooks, I love understanding what visions I have done yet and why.

What does your creative process look like?

I am very straight forward, and the more I plan the more I feel restricted. I love my free-flow, not stressing myself or the person I’m working with.

How do you get over a creative block?

It can take a day, it can take a week. But sometimes you simply have to force yourself to sit down and finish. Walks and coffee, or maybe a good sleep tend to do the magic.

What do you struggle with as an artist?

I do understand that Artists tend to be more emotional than others, and I’m definitely one of them.

What do you do when you need a break from art?

I don’t panic, I take it easy, I spend some time with my friends and re-connect. I look through my old work, I simply rest.

Favorite food-drink combo for when you’re down in the dumps.

Cheeeessseeee is a real weakness

Name one big accomplishment and an equally big fail from your life.

Getting new clients approaching you on a weekly basis always feels great. A big fail, I might have too many. My worst simple one would probably be enjoying shooting on analog for a week, the camera functions, and you realize you never put in the roll in the first place!

If money was no object, how would you spend your time on this earth?

I would probably print print print, every week, for huge exhibitions worldwide.
